An excerpt from Crush

  I walk with the traffic amongst downcast looks and headlight-like eyes. 

  I tug at my pockets and check the time briefly.

  Like an island in a river, I’ll become the structure which people rush by as if inanimate. It’s a common frenzy; when a horse runs, the rest join in, but they don’t know why the horse started running in the first place. It could have been afraid or exalted. But best to follow. I stop my stupid thoughts. 

  Here it comes. 

  I had insisted I did not have time for dating. I eat lunches al-desko and work late, followed by a meal for one, TV and bed. I have a time-consuming life and that’s just me; imagine catering for someone else, too…
